Woodrell paints a picture of the situation through the eyes of someone who is. Winter’s bone is so aggressively focused on nastiness that it would actually hurt the piece, artistically, if its political content wasn’t slightly nasty too. He stands with ree and looks out at the carcasses, wondering if their cousin blond milton will bring some meat over for them to eat later.

Woodrell also allows the reader to see her weaknesses, making identification with her character easily done.
