Bastien is now a baby vampire and celine has been glamoured out her memories of bastien, their love story, and his death. I figured the damned would put celine at the centre of a vampire vs werewolf conflict, and in some ways i was right, but at the same time so, so, wrong. Clever readers will be able to notice his quick mention of this classic film in his latest novel, shelter for the damned.
The deeper, richer characterization of the leads comes at the expense of the secondary cast, who (with a few exceptions) alternate primarily along gender lines, between dimwitted buffoons and jealous mean girls.

In exchange for saving him, celine has paid the price for his resurrection, the price being her memories, and no longer remembers bastien or the events that unfurled in book one. Book 1 was a historical murder mystery with vampires appearing quite late in the game, but in book 2, vampires are very present from the prologue on and there isn't much of a mystery element.
