Neil gaiman is a goodwill ambassador for unhcr and professor in the arts at bard college. (image and summary from goodreads.com) Like harry potter and all of the great children's book heros before him, the main character of neil gaiman's the graveyard book (which is a sort of homage to rudyard kipling's the jungle book) is an orphan being raised by surrogates, ghosts, not animals in this instance.

Suspenseful, yes, and a bit creepy, but lovely nonetheless.

Nobody (bod) owens arrives in the graveyard as a toddler and is raised by the spirits who live there. Bod crawls to the graveyard next to his house, where the inhabitant ghosts take him in and adopt him, where he lives until bod decides that he wants to live with his own kind: But if bod leaves the graveyard, he will be in danger from the man jack—who has already killed bod’s family. The graveyard book begins with an engrossing tale of a family murdered and a toddler left wandering in the fog.
