One of the obsessions of the book is how language fails her.
Susanna kaysen (winona ryder) is a promiscuous rebel who spends her time depressed and pondering her death. This book was based on her story in the 1960s when it wasn’t acceptable to tell anyone you had a mental illness, much less write a book about it. In her account of her predicaments and those of her friends in the hospital, kaysen makes her audience to make more inquiry on mental illness and its associated stigma.
Kaysen is clearly a gifted writer.
When kaysen was 18, in 1967, she was admitted to mclean psychiatric hospital outside boston, where she would spend the next 18 months. The book describes her time there with uncanny detail and really brings awareness. “girl, interrupted” by susanna kaysen.
