There was just enough extraneous historical detail to give some context to the story (i especially enjoyed reading about birth control in the 1840s), and the parts about the disaster itself were engrossing and, of course, disturbing. This long book may find some readers in central illinois among those who have a donner party relative in the family tree.
The story of the donner party is arguably one of the more famous stories of a family moving west because of the tragedy and gore that surrounds it.
And like always, this book about the donner party gave a different perspective than other books about the same topic do.
